THE OBJECT
Published in 1896, The Glory of Woman; or, Love, Marriage and Maternity is a fascinating Victorian-era volume exploring women's health, marriage, reproduction, pregnancy, childbirth, motherhood, beauty, and social life through the lens of its time.
Written by Monfort B. Allen and Amelia C. McGregor, the volume is richly illustrated with period anatomical and medical imagery, including illustrations of the heart and lungs, female pelvis, pregnancy and fetal development. Today, its pages offer a remarkable glimpse into late nineteenth-century ideas surrounding womanhood, medicine, domestic life, and the female body.
Perhaps most compelling is the inscription inside:
“To Annie By Mama 1898.”
A small trace of the women who once held this volume, written more than a century ago, and a beautiful reminder that this is not merely an old book but an object with a life of its own.
