THE OBJECT

An enchanting 1920s German Scherenschnitte by Berlin silhouette artist Lotte Gutzlaff, intricately cut from black paper and preserved beneath glass in its vintage frame.

Within the delicate silhouette, a central nymph-like figure reaches among flowering branches while three tiny winged figures dance through the surrounding garden. Every leaf, blossom, figure, and curling detail is rendered through the traditional art of Scherenschnitte—scissor-cut paper work.

Signed “Lotte Gutzlaff Berlin,” the scene is commonly known as Garden Nymph and Fairies or Blütenzauber—“Magic of Flowers.”

Whimsical, dark, and remarkably delicate, it feels like a tiny fairy tale captured in shadow.
